Aladdin's Ghostscript, Ghostview and GSview
Papers downloadable from these web pages are available in both PostScript® format (PS) and Portable Document Format® (PDF).
The PS files are preferable for printing (fancier graphs ;) whereas the PDF files include hyperlinks for easy cross references when reading on screen. The resolution of some of the figures in both file types has been reduced and the PS files have been compressed with gzip, to speed up downloading. Gzipped files are standard for Unix/Linux, but can be extracted with DOS/Windows' (pk)zip/Winzip as well.
When available, a PDF file from the journal in which the paper was published is present as well. These files are generally smaller but do not include hyperlinks.
